The Russians Conquered Camp Nou

In October 2009, Rubin Kazan created one of the biggest shocks in the history of Champions League football when they stunned a seemingly unbeatable Barcelona team by beating them 2-1 at the Camp Nou.

It was match day three in Group F between title holders Barcelona and Russian Champions Rubin Kazan. Barcelona had four points (Inter 0-0 (a), Dynamo Kyiv 2-2 (h)) before this match and Rubin Kazan had one point (Dynamo Kyiv 1-3 (a), Inter 1-1 (h)). The Spaniards had paid 113.000.000 € to strengthen an already strong side (titleholders). The Russian champions from Kazan had shopped players for a tenth.

Going into the match, Rubin had never won a Champions League match in their history, while Barcelona had won the title three times. It was a match between David and Goliath which developed into a story about an underdog who won the battle. The crowd had barely had time to settle in their seats before the Russians silenced the stadium. Aleksandr Ryazantsev gave the visitors the lead just two minutes into the match, but Barcelonas's continual pressure paid off when they leveled through Zlatan Ibrahimovic two minutes into the second half. But Turkish striker Karadeniz Gokdeniz would have the last word when he smashed in the winner 15 minutes from the end.

FC Barcelona - Rubin Kazan 1-2 (0-1)
0-1 Ryazantsev 2′, 1-1 Ibrahimovic 47′, 1-2 Gokdeniz 75′
FCB: Valdés - Alves (90+ Busquets), Piqué, Márquez (80 Keita), Abidal - Xavi, Touré, Iniesta - Pedro (66 Krkic), Messi, Ibrahimovic RK: Ryzhikov - Ansaldi, Navas, Kaleshin, Sharonov - Noboa, Semak (43 Murawski), Ryazantsev (83 Kasaev) - Gökdeniz Karadeniz (90+ Popov), Dominguez, Salukvadze

Rubin almost repeated the feat at home. They earned a goalless draw on an icy night in Kazan. Four points against the titleholders in two matches is a nice record but it was not enough in a group that also included future winners Inter.

1. Barcelona 11p
2. Inter 9p
3. Rubin Kazan 6p
4. Dynamo Kyiv 5p

Barcelona and Inter qualified to the next stage. Rubin finished third in the group and continued in Europa League. Inter defeated Barcelona in the semifinals (3-1, 0-1, total: 3-2). The Italians won the title after a 2-0 victory in the final against Bayern München.

Notes
- It took three and a half years before Barcelona would lose at Camp Nou again (Bayern 0-3 may 2013).
- Barcelona got their revenge against Rubin a year later when they won 2-0 at Camp Nou.
