Timely birdie gives Woods 66 in Round 3

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Tiger Woods got himself back into contention Saturday at the BMW Championship, even after the two-shot penalty in the second round that threatens to loom large in the third event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Woods stalled midway through the back nine at Conway Farms but made a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to shoot 5-under 66. At 9-under 204, he was five shots off the lead when he finished his round, but after a costly bogey at 18 by Furyk, Woods now finds himself just four back heading into Sunday.

Woods made six birdies in a seven-hole stretch around the turn to pull within one shot of the lead, but he missed a 6-footer for birdie on 14 and then pulled his 3-wood tee shot on the drivable 15th into the pond, leading to a bogey.



Woods began the third round seven shots off the lead after he was assessed a two-shot penalty after his second round. The ruling stemmed from his third shot behind the first green, when his ball came to rest near a pinecone and twig. Woods attempted to clear out the area and was adamant that the ball oscillated but did not move, though after several replays the officials ruled otherwise. That turned his second-round 70 into a 72.

Nonetheless, Woods, who was paired with Sergio Garcia in Round 3, roared back with seven birdies to give himself a chance to capture his sixth PGA Tour title of the season.
